All four of Domaine Taupenot’s premier crus in the Côte de Nuits are outstanding in the 2020 vintage, with each one a quintessential example of its respective terroir. The lovely 2020 Bel Air offers up a fine blend of black cherries, sweet dark berries, grilled meats, black minerality, woodsmoke, currant leaf and cedar. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and sappy at the core, with beautiful mineral undertow, tangy acids, ripe tannins and great balance and grip on the long and complex finish. Fine, fine juice. (Drink between 2033-2085)
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru has a slightly more savory bouquet with white pepper and clove aromas, fine mineralité and tension. The palate is medium-bodied with a little reduction on the entry, quite gourmand in style, fleshy and ripe towards the finish with touches of white pepper and Earl Grey. Maybe the La Riotte has a little more persistence?
